Hand carved chess set based on musical themes, surrounded by inlaid mountain scenes.
Description
This chess set was created for a family that not only is involved in music, but values time in the mountains. The two boys in the family play viola and cello, hence, the king and queen of the set are represented by these instruments. The bishops are trumpets, the pawns are eighth notes, the castles have the treble, bass and alto clef signs carved on three sides, and the knights, alas, are unmusical horses. Almost all the wood for the pieces is leftover cut away maple, and some spruce, from instruments that I have build over the years. The squares of the board are walnut and sycamore with a framework of lacewood and wenge. The inlaid mountain scenes incorporate many different woods including some from a branch, saved from the yard of the childhood home of the mom.
