The satinwood that was laminated to the cherry top was thick enough to allow a deeper carving, exposing the cherry below. The hinges are also satinwood. The measurements are 10 1/2 ” by 6″ by 5″. Satinwood has the peculiar quality that when sawed or sanded by machine it produces a pleasant aroma, something like cocoa butter. I have heard that where it is harvested, in Sri Lanka, small chips are burned as an incense, and an give one a relaxed feeling. I also heard that the aroma would kill a small bird! My hand carving or sanding is never  fast enough to produce smoke!
